Bernedoodle Generations & Types

F1, F1B, and Backcross Terms

F1 commonly describes the first cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. F1B commonly describes an F1 Bernedoodle bred back to a parent breed, but the breeder should always state whether the backcross is to a Poodle or a Bernese.

F1 in plain language

An F1 pairing starts with one purebred parent from each parent breed. It is often described as approximately half Bernese Mountain Dog and half Poodle by ancestry, but individual puppies still inherit different combinations of traits.

F1B and the direction of the backcross

Many F1B litters are backcrossed to Poodle, but a backcross can also be made in the Bernese direction. That distinction changes the expected ancestry and may influence coat and build, so “F1B” should never stand alone without the parent explanation.

Coat predictions need more than a label

Furnishings, curl, and shedding are influenced by specific genes and family history. An F1B label may suggest a breeding direction, but it does not guarantee a non-shedding or allergy-safe dog.

What this guide can and cannot tell you

Generation and breeding-type labels summarize ancestry, but inherited traits do not appear as a simple average. Coat, build, behavior, and health risk must be evaluated through the actual parents and family line.

No label should be used as an absolute promise of low shedding, allergy compatibility, adult size, temperament, or health.

Questions worth asking

  • What do the actual parent dogs show in adult size, coat, health testing, and temperament?
  • What has the breeder observed in related dogs or comparable litters?
  • Which parts of the expectation are well supported, and which parts remain normal biological variation?

Bottom line

F1 commonly identifies a first Bernese Mountain Dog-to-Poodle cross. F1B commonly identifies an F1 Bernedoodle bred back to a parent breed, but the breeder should state whether that backcross is to Poodle or Bernese Mountain Dog.
