What Is a Multi-Gen Bernedoodle?
F1, F1B, F2, Multi-Gen Bernedoodles
Bernedoodle generations can sound a little like alphabet soup. F1, F1B, F2, Multi-Gen. Add Mini, Standard, or Ultra to the name, and families can quickly find themselves staring at a puppy listing with more questions than answers.
So, what is a Multi-Gen Bernedoodle?
A Multi-Gen Bernedoodle is a Bernedoodle produced through multiple generations of intentional breeding. Instead of being the first direct pairing of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, a Multi-Gen puppy comes from an established Bernedoodle lineage.
That does not mean every Multi-Gen Bernedoodle has the exact same genetic percentages, coat, size, or personality. The term describes the puppy’s lineage, not one fixed recipe.
How Bernedoodle Generations Work
To understand a Multi-Gen Bernedoodle, it helps to begin with the earlier generations.
An F1 Bernedoodle is the first-generation cross between a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and a purebred Poodle. On paper, the puppies are approximately 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50% Poodle.
An F1B Bernedoodle is commonly produced by pairing an F1 Bernedoodle with a Poodle. This increases the percentage of Poodle ancestry and often creates a curlier, lower-shedding coat. However, coat traits can still vary between puppies.
A Multi-Gen Bernedoodle is produced after Bernedoodles have already been established within the family line. This may involve pairing two Bernedoodles or breeding a Bernedoodle from a later generation with another carefully selected Bernedoodle.
There is no single percentage that applies to every Multi-Gen pairing. That is why it is more helpful to look at the actual parents, their health testing, their coats, their sizes, and the reason the breeder chose that pairing.
To understand a Multi-Gen Bernedoodle, it helps to begin with the earlier generations.
What Does a Multi-Gen Bernedoodle Look Like?
Multi-Gen Bernedoodles can have soft, wavy coats, curlier Poodle-style coats, or textures that fall somewhere in between. They may carry traditional tri-color markings, merle patterns, phantom coloring, sable, chocolate, or other combinations found within the parents’ genetics.
Even puppies born in the same litter will not look identical. One may have a looser wave and broad white markings, while a sibling has tighter curls and darker coloring. Genetics likes to leave a little room for surprise.
Coat appearance can also change as a puppy matures. A young puppy’s soft coat is not always an exact preview of the adult coat. Texture, curl, and color may develop differently as the puppy coat is replaced.
Do Multi-Gen Bernedoodles Shed?
Many Multi-Gen Bernedoodles are bred for lower-shedding coats, but “Multi-Gen” does not automatically mean non-shedding. A puppy’s shedding potential is influenced by the coat genes inherited from both parents. Furnishings, curl, texture, and other genetic factors matter more than the generation name printed on the puppy’s profile.
This is why parent selection and genetic testing are so important. A knowledgeable breeder can use coat testing and family history to make more informed predictions, but no breeder can honestly guarantee that a puppy will never shed. Some Multi-Gen Bernedoodles shed very little. Others may shed more than expected, especially if they inherit a straighter coat.
Families should also know that no dog is completely hypoallergenic. Dog allergies are caused by proteins found in dander, saliva, and other sources, not simply loose hair. A lower-shedding coat may be easier for some families to manage, but it does not guarantee that someone with allergies will not react.

What Is a Multi Gen Bernedoodle’s Temperament Like?
Multi-Gen Bernedoodles are often affectionate, intelligent, playful, and strongly connected to their families. They may carry the loyal, easygoing nature associated with the Bernese Mountain Dog alongside the alertness and trainability commonly found in Poodles.
Temperament is shaped by several pieces working together:
- The personalities of both parents
- Traits within the larger family line
- Early handling and socialization
- The puppy’s individual disposition
- Training, boundaries, and routine after going home
A puppy should be chosen for more than color or generation. Energy level, confidence, sensitivity, and family fit deserve just as much attention.
Grooming a Multi-Gen Bernedoodle
Low shedding does not mean low maintenance. In fact, coats that release less hair often require more hands-on grooming because loose hair can remain trapped within the coat and form mats.
Most Multi-Gen Bernedoodles need:
- Thorough brushing several times each week
- Regular combing down to the skin
- Professional grooming approximately every six to eight weeks
- Routine ear, nail, and dental care
- Extra attention behind the ears, beneath the collar, under the legs, and around the tail
A quick brush across the top of the coat may make the puppy look tidy, but tangles usually begin closer to the skin. A metal comb is one of the easiest ways to check for areas a brush may have missed.

We’ve had our LunaBella for 4 months now and she is hands down the best pup we’ve ever had. Immensely smart, gentle and loves pleasing my husband and I! She is the best addition to my practice and loves being with hospice patients. Thank you Jay!Posted on Google Kas MillerFebruary 23, 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We purchased a standard Bernedoodle in December 2025. We love her! The best dog, smart, playful, the best demeanor, great with kids, and really fits in perfectly with our family. So in love with her. Jay was super easy to work with. Would definitely use them again.Posted on Google jennifer lothianFebruary 21, 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Highly recommend!! Our family is in Orlando and we got our boy from Hoosier Canines just before Christmas in 2025 and had a fantastic experience! Jay and his brother were easy to communicate with and answered all our questions as they came up. They shared links to help us prepare before his arrival and even have a kit you can purchase that has everything to get started if needed. Most of all they are honest and transparent with everything, which helped so much with purchasing a puppy so far from home. We would absolutely use them again if we ever decided to add to our family!Posted on Google Brian PalmerFebruary 20, 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Hoosier Canines is an outstanding breeder with amazing puppies! From the time I inquired about adopting a puppy to the moment Baxter arrived, and of course throughout the puppy parenting process, I have incredible gratitude to Jay Miller and his family and organization for doing such a great job. There are a lot of reasons you should consider adopting from Hoosier Canines (thorough health and genetic testing, incredible care for the puppies from the day they are born, amazing mom & dad dogs) but one of the things I think is a key differentiator is the Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) they do for their pups. My puppy seemed to be okay with exposure to anything after a few instances and I think ENS really helped with that. Here are photos of Baxter (3 of 16-17 weeks and 1 when we I got him at 8 weeks old). He's the best!!Posted on Google Maggie BroekhuisFebruary 16, 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My husband and I got our puppy from Hoosier Cannies and we loved our experience. The facilities were clean and the breeder is very knowledgeable and helpful. He was willing to answer our questions and was quick to respond. We just adore our little puppy. She is so social and loves everyone- dog or person! She is so sweet, loving, and loyal. A true companion! Would use them again in a heart beat!Posted on Google Morgan CowherdJanuary 25, 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We have adopted two bernedoodles from Jay. Our experience was wonderful on both occasions. Jay really cares about finding the right match for your family. Both of ours girls have excellent demeanors which are beyond perfect for our young children and they are loved by all that meet them! There’s not doubt that we will be getting our next furry family member from Hoosier!Posted on Google Emily BartleJanuary 15, 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had an amazing experience with Hoosier Canines and cannot recommend them enough. We got our puppy, Luna, in November and she has been the perfect addition to our family. From the very beginning, Jay, the owner of Hoosier Canines, was nothing but wonderful to work with. His communication was excellent—he was responsive, helpful, and always willing to answer any questions we had throughout the entire process. He was also very upfront and transparent about all information, which we truly appreciated. We are from Chicago and Jay is based in Indiana. At first, I was a little nervous since I had never met him and had never even heard of the town he was located in. However, from our very first conversation, he made us feel completely comfortable and confident in our decision and trusting him was one of the best choices we made. Luna has been incredibly healthy, and even our veterinarian was pleasantly surprised at how great her health was, noting that she came with no complications. This really speaks volumes about the care and attention Jay provides to his puppies. Bringing a puppy into a home with a one-year-old can feel overwhelming, but Luna fit right in with our family from day one. She has such a great temperament, and it’s clear she was raised with care and love. The entire experience was smooth, professional, and reassuring, which made such a big difference for us as a family. You can truly tell that Jay is passionate about what he does and genuinely cares about both his dogs and the families they go to. We are beyond happy with our decision to go through Hoosier Canines and will absolutely be coming back to Jay when we are ready to add another puppy to our family. If you’re looking for a breeder who is trustworthy, communicative, and dedicated, Hoosier Canines is the place to go. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Posted on Google Rebecca MJanuary 13, 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We are so very grateful for Hoosier canines!! Our addition to the family has been wonderful, we love her so much..definitely a special one🥰 Thank you!!Posted on Google Amanda HooperJanuary 8, 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a wonderful experience with Hoosier Canines and absolutely love our Ultra Bernedoodle! Communication was excellent throughout the entire process, and we really appreciated being able to visit her multiple times as a puppy. The breeder was fantastic with our kids and made the whole experience feel personal and family-friendly. We also chose to add training through Training That Lasts, and it was well worth it. Our puppy came home with a great foundation — confident, calm in many situations, and clearly well socialized — while still being a playful, mischievous puppy. Even after bringing her home, Hoosier Canines followed up several times to check in, which meant a lot to us. We highly recommend them to anyone looking for a well-raised, happy Bernedoodle!Showing our latest reviewsVerified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. How Do You Choose the Right Multi-Gen Puppy?
Start with the breeder, the parents, and the puppy’s temperament. Color can catch your eye, but it cannot tell you how that puppy may fit into your home.
Ask the breeder:
- What generation are both parents?
- What are the parents’ adult weights?
- What coat traits were considered before the pairing?
- Have both parents completed genetic and health testing?
- What are the parents’ personalities like?
- How are the puppies handled and socialized?
- How does puppy selection work?
- What health records and guarantees are provided?
At Hoosier Canines, our parent dogs are selected with health, temperament, structure, and the goals of each litter in mind. Our puppies receive early care and socialization before joining their new families.
