Bernedoodle Coat Types & Care
Furnished vs. Unfurnished Bernedoodles
Furnishings are the longer facial hairs that create a beard, eyebrows, and the classic shaggy doodle face. An unfurnished Bernedoodle has a smoother face with less pronounced facial hair. Furnishings are distinct from body-coat curl.

Furnished coats
A furnished dog may have a straight, wavy, or curly body coat. Furnishings often contribute to the familiar teddy-bear appearance and can also trap food, moisture, and loose hair around the face.
Unfurnished coats
An unfurnished dog typically has a cleaner facial outline and may resemble the Bernese side more strongly. Unfurnished does not mean unhealthy or incorrect; it is a normal inherited coat presentation.
Shedding and testing
Furnishings can influence shedding expectations, but they do not work alone. Genetic testing, parent coats, and family history can improve predictions. Families should choose based on appearance preference and realistic care, not the assumption that one coat is universally better.
What this guide can and cannot tell you
Coat traits exist on a spectrum, and the puppy coat is not always a perfect preview of the adult coat. Parent coats, genetic testing, and related litters can improve expectations without eliminating variation.
No coat makes a dog maintenance-free or completely hypoallergenic. Families should be prepared for routine grooming and should seek medical guidance for significant allergy concerns.
Questions worth asking
- What do the actual parent dogs show in adult size, coat, health testing, and temperament?
- What has the breeder observed in related dogs or comparable litters?
- Which parts of the expectation are well supported, and which parts remain normal biological variation?
Bottom line
Furnishings are the longer facial hair around the muzzle and eyebrows associated largely with a variant near the RSPO2 gene. An unfurnished Bernedoodle has a smoother face and may resemble the Bernese side more strongly in facial coat.
