FAQS ABOUT BERNEDOODLES:
1: Are Bernedoodles completely hypoallergenic?
Answer: Well, the answer is not a plain “Yes”. In general, they are considered a hypoallergenic breed due to the genes that they are to inherit from their Poodle parent. As they also inherit some of the Bernese coat, the F1 generation isn’t considered completely hypoallergenic. But the first-generation backcross or an F1b Bernedoodle has a higher chance of having a low-shedding coat because it is a cross between an F1 Bernedoodle and a Poodle which means it is 75% Poodle and 25% Bernese.
2: Is a male or a female Bernedoodles better?
Answer: Both, males and females are equally good but there are some differences in their personalities that may or may not be compatible with you. Male dogs (any breed) can be more stubborn but very affectionate and entertaining. On the other side, female dogs (any breed) are more obedient and easy to train. Overall, you can’t predict any dog’s personality as each puppy from the same litter may have a different personality. It also depends on how you train and socialize your puppy.
3: I am getting a dog for the first time, is a Bernedoodle an ideal first dog?
Answer: Yes, it is the best dog for inexperienced and novice owners. It is a very intelligent, social, and loyal dog that does exceptionally well with children and other dogs. Make sure you train and socialize your dog from an early age to get the best of it.
4: Are Bernedoodles AKC registered?
Answer: No, they are not. They are not recognized by the AKC because AKC doesn’t recognize designer breeds. Still, we are hopeful they may be recognized by the major kennel clubs soon. All of our purebred parents here at Hoosier Canines are AKC Registered! Our Bernedoodles are CKC Registered!
5: Are Bernedoodles Aggressive?
Answer: No, they are very calm and well-tempered dogs. They are very adaptable and easily-trainable dogs. They love to be loved and may not tolerate harsh behavior. Make sure you socialize them well or they may be spoiled.
6: How big is a fully grown Bernedoodle?
Answer: The Standard Bernedoodle may weigh between 70 to 90 pounds and stand between 23 to 29 inches at the shoulder. The Mini or Miniature Bernedoodle may weigh between 25 to 50 pounds and stand between 18 to 22 inches at the shoulder. While the Tiny Bernedoodle may weigh between 10 to 25 pounds and stand between 11 to 17 inches at the shoulder.
7: Do Bernedoodles bark?
Answer: Yes, they do because all dogs are meant to bark and Bernedoodles are no exception. The good news is that their peaceful demeanor means they rarely ever use it and you can control this behavior with proper training.
8: Are Bernedoodles high-maintenance dogs?
Answer: Yes, they are. You need to brush their coat regularly to keep their coat from tangling and matting, failing to do which results in irritative skin and other related health issues. Their grooming from a professional groomer is also necessary every 2-3 months. So, you should get a Bernedoodle only when you have enough time and budget for their grooming and maintenance.
9: Do Bernedoodles like water and swimming?
Answer: Overall, they are water lovers and would not hesitate to swim whenever they get a chance. But some dogs may not like water and in fact, they may even hate to be bathed. If you love swimming, you should start exposing your Bernedoodle puppy to water and indoor pools so they could develop this habit with age.
10: Can I leave my Bernedoodle home alone for a long time?
Answer: They create a very strong bond with their owners and prefer to be the center of attention all the time. So, they are more likely to develop separation anxiety if left alone for a certain time. This behavior can be controlled through crate training at an early age.
